Most burglaries are committed by opportunist thieves. In one quarter of all burglaries committed they don't even have to use force - they get in through an open door or window

 

As a Locksmith, I often get called to scenes of burglaries and see the upset it can cause, a few effective measures listed below can prevent you being the next burglary crime statistic. Some are obvious but you would be surprised how often people don’t implement them!

 

  • Lock all doors and windows even if you are just popping out.

 

  • Hide any valuables from view, maybe use net curtains or similar.

 

  • Don’t leave items like ladders or garden tools outside, these are often used to force entry.

 

  • If tools have to be left out, ensure they are properly secured by a chain and a quality padlock, and any garden sheds etc are secure.

 

  • Never leave your keys under the doormat or plant pot, leave them with a trusted neighbour who can also tidy your post, draw your curtains and generally make the place look lived in while your away. If it snows a few recent footprints leading to your property will also give the impression you are at home.

 

  • The use of timers for lights and even radios are a cheap and effective way of giving the impression someone is in.

 

  • Keep any outside trees and bushes pruned as these can be used as effective cover for any intruder.

 

  • Again locks are there for a reason, so make sure they are used including any window locks.

 

  • Be a good neighbour, if you see anyone acting suspiciously in your neighbourhood, call the police. Join a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme – there are now over 130,000 in this country. Anyone can start up a Watch – call your nearest police station for details.
